What is HIV?

HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, which is our body’s natural defence against illness. The virus destroys a type of white blood cell in the immune system called a T-helper cell, and makes copies of itself inside these cells. T-helper cells are also referred to as CD4 cells.

As HIV destroys more CD4 cells and makes more copies of itself, it gradually breaks down a person’s immune system. This means someone living with HIV, who is not receiving treatment, will find it harder and harder to fight off infections and diseases.

If HIV is left untreated, it may take up to 10 or 15 years for the immune system to be so severely damaged it can no longer defend itself at all. However, the speed HIV progresses will vary depending on age, health and background.

Basic facts about HIV:

(1) HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus.
(2) There is effective antiretroviral treatment available so people with HIV can live a normal, healthy life.
(3) The earlier HIV is diagnosed, the sooner treatment can start – leading to better long term health.
(4) HIV is found in - , blood, vaginal and - fluids, and breast milk.
(5) HIV cannot be transmitted through sweat, saliva or urine.
(6) Using male condoms or female condoms during - is the best way to prevent HIV and other - ually transmitted infections.
(7) If you inject drugs, always use a clean needle and syringe, and never share equipment.
(8) If you are pregnant and living with HIV, the virus in your blood could pass into your baby’s body, or after giving birth through breastfeeding. Taking HIV treatment virtually eliminates this risk.
You might also experience the following HIV symptoms:

(1) Nausea.
(2) Vomiting.
(3) Persistent Diarrhea.
(4) Chronic Fatigue.
(5) Rapid Weight Loss.
(6) Cough and Shortness of Breath.
(7) Recurring Fever, Chills, and Night Sweats.
(8) Rashes, Sores, or Lesions in the Mouth or Nose, on the Genitals, or Under the Skin.

If symptoms appear, they usually do so within days or weeks after infection,
and end after 1 to 2 weeks.

If you experience any above symptom please go for HIV ELISA Test, and after that you can know about your HIV Status, if report comes " POSITIVE" so start Anti Retro Viral Medicine (Medicine Should be continue for life long because HIV is not curable, and yes we can Liv long life with HIV.
How is HIV spread through - ?

You can get infected from - ual contact with someone who is infected with HIV. - ual contact that can transmit HIV includes:

(1) Vaginal - ( - in the vagina)
(2) - ( - in the anus of either a man or a woman)
(3) - ( - in the mouth)

If you have - , the best thing to do is to practice "safer - " all the time. To do so, always use a condom, dental dam, or other latex barrier and avoid "rough - " or other activities that might cause bleeding. If you use lube with a condom, make sure it is water based, not oil-based. Oil-based lube causes latex condoms to break.

If you have unprotected - with someone who is infected, it doesn't mean that you will be infected, too. But there is always a chance, especially if your partner is not on effective HIV medicines. Using condoms and PrEP reduces your risk.

How is HIV spread through blood?

You can become infected if you have contact with the blood of someone who is infected with HIV. Blood-borne infection with HIV can occur through:

(1) Sharing injection equipment when shooting drugs
(2) Getting tattoos or body piercings with unsterilized needles
(3) Accidental needle sticks
(4) Blood transfusions
(5) Splashing blood in your eyes

HIV is NOT spread by:

(1) Hugging or massage
(2) Masturbation
(3) Fantasizing
(4) Dry kissing
(5) Daily living with someone who has HIV
(6) Insect bites.
How is HIV treated?

There are many treatments now that can help people with HIV, and these treatments are much better than in earlier times. As a result, most people with HIV are living long and healthy lives.
Currently, medicines can slow the growth of the virus or stop it from making copies of itself. Although these drugs don't eliminate the virus from the body, they keep the amount of virus in the blood low. The amount of virus in the blood is called the viral load, and it can be measured by a test.
There are several types of anti-HIV drugs. Each type attacks the virus in a specific way. It's similar to the way the military plans an attack using the different strengths of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.

How are the drugs taken?

Most people who are getting treated for HIV take 3 or more drugs. This is called combination therapy or "the - tail." (It also has a longer name: Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) or Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART). Combination therapy is the most effective treatment for HIV.
People who are HIV positive need to work closely with their clinicians to decide when to start treatment and which drugs to take.

When should HIV drugs be started?

Evidence from studies shows that starting treatment early after HIV infection (ideally when the immune system is still strong) is most effective at protecting the health of people with HIV, and it helps protect partners from becoming infected. So, treatment should be started as early as possible after HIV is diagnosed.

Do you have to be treated for the rest of your life?

Right now, there is no cure for HIV infection or AIDS. So, once you start treatment, you have to continue to be sure the virus doesn't multiply out of control.
What is an HIV test?

The HIV test determines whether you have been infected with HIV--the virus that causes AIDS.
When you get infected with HIV, the HIV virus replicates itself and spreads through the body, and your body produces cells and particles (antibodies) to fight the virus.
There are different types of HIV tests, some that can detect HIV itself (HIV antigen), and some that can detect antibodies to HIV in your body. If you have either HIV antigens or HIV antibodies, then you have been infected with HIV. The HIV test does not tell you if you have AIDS, how long you have been infected, or how sick you might be--for this you need other kinds of tests.
Using newer HIV testing methods, it is possible to identify most cases of HIV 2-3 weeks after infection.
